(ECNS)-- Two little girls were found dead in a washing machine Saturday while their mother cooked in the kitchen and father watched TV in the dining room in Qiaoshe town, Xinjian county, Nanchang, of Jiangxi province.
People wondered how the two sisters, age 4 and 2, climbed into the washer, closed the lid and started the machine, which was on the balcony.
There was a chair in front of the machine, the family said.
A witness who helped transport the kids to a local hospital said, "The washer was filled with blood."
A photo shows that the brand of the fully automatic top-loading washer involved in the case is Haier.
After the incident, the two sisters were buried the very day. The parents moved back to their old house in a neighboring village with their third child, a 1-year-old boy.
The local government expressed condolences to the family, and a government spokesperson, surnamed Hu, said that the family will receive financial assistance.
A customer service staffer at Haier said that the machine's drying cycle should not start with an open lid.
Local police launched an investigation into the incident.
