(ECNS) -- A post showing a unisex restroom in Hebei's Baiyangdian has sparked interest on the Internet, Yanzhao Metropolis Daily reported.
A staffer at Baiyangdian Tourism Wharfs responded that it was built for the elderly, infirm and handicapped.
The staffer, surnamed Wang, said the unisex restroom, which was common internationally, allowed relatives of people with reduced mobility to accompany them.
"It was built three or four years ago, and has passed acceptance checks," he added.
The unisex restroom is much bigger than standard ones, but very few tourists use it.
Tourists don.t know about the unisex restroom, and no further explanation of the restroom was provided, so they choose not to use it, a cleaner said.
Unisex restrooms first appeared in Thailand, which were built specifically for transgender men, and then developed into the one for the infirm.
Female and male symbols with a wheelchair usually indicate a unisex restroom.
