(ECNS) -- A woman in Beijing's Tongzhou district, surnamed Qi, who was accused of burning her 5-year-old nephew last September, was sentenced to seven years in jail by Tongzhou Court on Thursday.
Even after the judgment was announced, Qi insisted on her innocence, and made an appeal to the court.
According to the court, on Sept 6, 2012, Qi caught her nephew playing with fire near their house. Qi, who tried to stop him, was angered by the boy's disobedient attitude. She then poured oil on his body and burned him with a lighter.
Qi once confessed that she did pour oil on the boy and burned him on Sept 11, but at a hearing in Tongzhou Court on June 14, Qi withdrew her confession and claimed that she was innocent, and that she had nothing to do with burning the boy.
Because the burns covered 30 percent of the boy's body, they were defined as a severe injury by an official forensic center in Tongzhou district.
