Nanchang (CNS) -- Rumors that monkeys on Lushan Mountain were being put on contraceptives are false, the local forestry department in Jiangxi province said on Wednesday.
According to a recent report in a Jiangxi province newspaper, staff members at Lushan Mountain park are feeding contraceptive pills to the primates at the park to keep their numbers down. The report has become a hit online.
"We have never fed monkeys pregnancy-prevention medicines, since the number is still within the breeding capacity of the park," said a park official.
"We have adopted a free-range style to raise these monkeys, so it's even hard for us to catch them, not to mention seize them and feed them contraceptive pills," a park official surnamed Chen added.
A total of 50 monkeys were introduced into the scenic spot at the end of 2005, according to a park official. At this point, the number has more than doubled, the official added.
