Chinese-run birthing centers remain unlicensed in Canada

(ECNS) -- Chinese-run birthing centers in Canada are fighting to be legalized, a report in the Sing Tao Daily (Canada) has said.

Birthing centers, which assist laboring mothers, have existed in Canada for many years but lack official supervision, and a business license has never been granted to any of them, according to the report.

Mrs. Zhou, a Taiwanese Canadian who runs a birthing center in Richmond, British Columbia, said that initially her main business was focused on local mothers. Later, it also began providing accommodation for pregnant women from China who want to have their babies in Canada, where newborns receive passports and citizenship.

Zhou said that no accidents have ever happened, and that she provides health insurance for pregnant women and arranges thorough medical checks once they arrive in Canada.

However, when her son applied for a business license for the center, he was denied by the city government due to a lack of precedent.

Zhou said she hopes the government will eventually fill in the regulatory gaps, so that in cases of disputes, the interests of consumers and businesses will be protected.
