Guangzhou (ECNS) -- No dairy brand in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, can ensure that their products are made with fresh milk because there is a limited supply of it, according to a local dairy management official.
There are only 20,000 cows in Guangzhou, and only half of them are able to be milked. In order to meet demand, dairy companies must transport milk from other cities, according to Wang Dingmian, deputy director of the Guangzhou Dairy Industry Management Office, on Saturday.
"However, the amount of fresh milk produced locally and transported from other cities covers only 50 to 60 percent of the market demand in Guangzhou," Wang said. "The rest has to be filled with reconstituted milk that is a mixture of imported milk powder and water."
Restricted land resources in Guangdong have resulted in the limited number of cows, according to Chen Sanyou, secretary-general of the provincial dairy industry association in Guangdong.
Guangdong is home to 63,000 cows, which account for only 0.4 percent of the total number in the country, Chen said.
"As an untaxed agriculture sector, the dairy industry can contribute little to the fiscal revenue of local governments in Guangdong province," Chen said, adding that "governments sometimes even have to subsidize the industry."
For governments whose fiscal revenue is largely supported by land, supporting the development of the dairy industry is unaffordable, Chen added.
