Houston (CNS) -- As many as 70 percent of employees in the United States dislike or are disengaged from their jobs, a recent poll said.

The bad news for corporate managers came from a report titled "2013 State of the American Workplace" released by Gallup, an American consulting company.

Only 30 percent of the surveyed 150,000 full- and part-time workers said they enjoy their jobs and bosses, and are inspired by their work, the poll said.

Nearly 20 percent of respondents are what Gallup classifies as "actively disengaged," the ones who are muttering complaints at the water cooler and using their lunch breaks to search for job postings online.

The remaining 50 percent are "disengaged," Gallup said, and not "inspired by their managers."

The poll said an estimated $450 billion to $500 billion was lost last year because of low productivity, stolen office supplies and missed days at work.

"The general consciousness about the importance of employee engagement seems to have increased in the past decade. But there is a gap between knowing about engagement and doing something about it in most American workplaces," stated Jim Harter of Gallup.

Gallup also found that people who work from home are actually more engaged than those in an office setting, and that 44 percent with available flex time had a higher well-being.
