Beijing (ECNS) -- A national-level training center for ancient book restoration was launched Saturday at the Library of Ancient Books, an organization under the National Library of China (NLC).

The center's launch ceremony coincided with China's eighth Cultural Heritage Day, and an exhibition of restored ancient books was also held.

The event was attended by Zhou Heping, director-general of the NLC, and Ma Wenhui, director of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Department under the Ministry of Culture.

As part of proceedings, eight young librarians formally acknowledged as their master Du Wei, an expert of ancient book restoration.

Experts from the National Library have gained much experience in restoring ancient books over the years, and precious ancient books such as the "Yongle Canon" have been successfully restored by the library since 1949.

Ancient book restoration was listed as a state-level intangible cultural heritage in 2008.
