Chengdu (CNS) -- Business leaders shared insights on tackling youth unemployment around the world at the Fortune Global Forum on Thursday and suggested young people improve their competitiveness by working on their soft skills.

A McKinsey report shows that the unemployment rate for 15- to 25-year-olds is two to three times higher than that of older generations.

By the year 2020, China will be home to over 20 million surplus laborers.

DuPont CEO Ellen Kullman pointed out that though colleges and universities can provide scientific knowledge to students, the lack of soft skills training makes the students less competitive in the job market.

"Soft skills" refer to a cluster of personality traits, social graces, communication, language, personal habits, friendliness, and optimism that characterize relationships with other people.

They are key to personal career success for employees, according to Xu Xiaoping, founder of ZhenFund.

Businesses should also be committed to improving their working environment by avoiding bureaucracy, and provide a platform for young people to utilize their talents, said Lu Mai, secretary general of the China Development Research Foundation.
