Shanghai (CNS) -- The municipal government of Shanghai launched the trial run of a new credit information platform on Monday, allowing it to track the credibility of companies and the credit ratings of individuals.

Government officials now can access the records of companies and individuals collected by administrative and judicial government departments, as well as utility providers, according to the government.

Examples include records of companies that performed badly in carrying out contracts, and individuals who have fallen behind on their utility payments.

The platform will be used in granting government contracts and allocating government spending, the city government said.

It is a big step in the government's efforts to build a broader social credibility system, it added.

Individuals and enterprises are expected to be able to access the platform by year's end, and they can file a petition if they disagree with credibility records.
