Beijing (CNS) -- An auction of three private letters written by Yang Jiang and her husband Qian Zhongshu, a renowned literary scholar now deceased, has been canceled amid strong protest from Yang, according to the Beijing Poly International Auction Company on Sunday.

Yang has been in a fight with Beijing-based auction company Sungari since last month over the company's decision to auction 110 private letters and manuscripts by Qian, Yang and their late daughter. Yang has accused the sales, scheduled for June, of infringing on the family's rights of authorship, privacy and reputation.

After hearing that a similar auction had been planned by Poly, Yang launched a second protest on Sunday.

"We have never authorized any company or individual to handle or sell our letters," said Yang's statement.

"There are many ways of making money, but one cannot expose people's private affairs or trade them as commodities," said Yang, adding that publicizing the content of the letters may result in copyright infringement.

An online statement by Poly said the three letters had been taken off Monday's auction.

Poly said that, out of respect for Qian and Yang, the company immediately decided to cancel the sale upon learning of her protest.
