(ECNS) — About 98 percent of children's products in East China's Jiangsu province have passed spot checks by the Quality Supervision Bureau, according to its report released on Wednesday.

The spot check results show that 1,071 out of 1,090 production batches of children's products meet standards, registering an average rate of 98.3 percent, up 0.3 percentage points from 2012.

Ten of the 14 children's food categories, including biscuits, puddings, frozen drinks, preserved fruit, milk powder, dairy products, chips, candies, and baby formula, have all passed the spot checks.

Pudding products have passed quality checks for three consecutive years, and biscuits, dairy products, chips and baby formula for two consecutive years.

However, only 95.3 percent of instant food passed the quality checks, and beverages 95.9 percent.

Other children's products, including make-up, plush toys, plastic toys, bicycles, shoes, stationery, sportswear and diapers, have all passed quality checks.

Prescription eyeglasses for children failed to pass quality checks, with a number of them failing to meet the prescription specifications. These substandard glasses may cause double vision (diplopia) or ghost images, vision distortion and eye fatigue.

A quick-response mechanism was launched by the Quality Supervision Bureau of Jiangsu, and related companies have been urged to make fixes within a certain time frame, and all substandard products destroyed, dealt with or taken off shelves.
