(ECNS) -- Results of government-sponsored nutrition and diet monitoring showed 32.4 percent of urban citizens are overweight and 13.2 percent obese.

The statistics were released by Ma Guansheng, deputy director of the Nutrition and Food Safety Department under the Chinese Center for Disease Control, at a nutrition conference in Hangzhou on Saturday.

Ma said being overweight and obesity are on the rise among urban citizens, especially urban children, which have resulted in a high incidence of chronic diseases, such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

Urban people's imbalanced diet is a major factor, with experts saying that urbanites eat too much meat and too little grains. They also eat too much salt, but not enough fruits and vegetables.

The phenomenon can also be partly attributed to the fact that bicycling and walking have gradually been replaced by vehicle use. People who exercise in their spare time are increasing in big cities, but decreasing in medium and small cities.

Ma called on a balanced diet and more exercise.
