(ECNS) -- The southern section of the first phase of Subways Line 1 and Line 2 in Southwest China's Kunming city, Yunnan province, went on a trial run with passengers on Monday.
It is the first fully functional plateau subway in China.
The first subway train departed from Xiaodong Village at 7 o'clock on Monday morning and arrived at University Town South 30 minutes later.
The successful operation of the two new subway lines marks a new era of the Kunming Subway, according to Ma Tianwen, deputy general manager of Kunming Rail Transit Co.
"It is much more convenient than taking a bus," said Liu Gang, a resident of Kunming city who works at University Town. For him, the opening of new subway lines offers a new and more convenient way to commute.
Construction of the first phase of Line 1 and Line 2, linking the city's north and south, began on April 30, 2010.
The newly opened south section of Line 1 and Line 2 between Xiaodong Village and University Town South has 12 stations and is about 22 kilometers. The daily passenger capacity is expected to reach 168,000.
The company also plans to press ahead with subway construction in the city and ensure all 6 subway lines are running by the end of 2018.
