Toronto (CNS) -- Canadian dignitaries and politicians were among those who got a sneak peak of a giant panda exhibit in Toronto on Thursday.

Speaking at a ceremony for the preview, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford said, "We are pleased to have the privilege of providing a home for Er Shun and Da Mao, because very few cities and zoos have this opportunity."

"We hope their stay at the Toronto Zoo is an enjoyable one," he added.

Toronto Zoo CEO John Tracogna said the pandas' arrival in Canada was the result of many years of hard work by the governments of Canada and China. "Today is a proud day for all Canadians," he also said.

China's ambassador to Canada, Zhang Junsai, was present for the event, as was Michael Chan, Ontario's minister of tourism, culture and sport.

The exhibit will formally open at the Toronto Zoo this Saturday. The pandas will stay in Toronto and Calgary zoos each for five years.
