ECNS — Children of Chinese Americans with excellent academic records are being forced to choose less prestigious, lower-ranking US colleges because of an increased number of applicants this year, usqiaobao.com reported on Monday.

The acceptance rate at Harvard University has hit a record-low of 5.8 percent, followed by Yale University at 6.72 percent, and Princeton University at 7.29 percent.

Other Ivy League colleges such as the University of Pennsylvania, Cornell University and Brown University all saw applications inch up, pushing down freshman acceptance rates. Even more selective was Stanford University, which accepted a record-low 5.69 percent of all its applicants this year.

Mr. Chen, a college counselor, said the reasons for the lowered acceptance rate include increasing international student numbers and more high-caliber Chinese-American children.

Chen suggested that parents encourage their children to make independent decisions and choose their own paths.
