Zhengzhou (CNS) -- A freeway toll station in Central China on Tuesday responded to public criticism about charging quake-relief cars, saying it was in accordance with regulations.

It was reported that four cars from a pharmaceutical enterprise in Shandong province were taking medicine to the quake-hit areas when they were stopped by the toll station in Sanmenxia, Henan province, and charged 1,620 yuan in fees. It spurred intense criticism on social media.

Henan Freeway Development Co, which is in charge of local toll stations, said cars going to the affected areas for relief work are exempt from the fees, but the four cars from Qingdao didn't show any proof from local government or civil department.

The company promised they would return the fees if the cars can offer proof that they had been to the quake-hit areas.

A section chief at the company, surnamed Hou, said freeway toll stations have to verify the cars' destination. "The staffer on the ground said the cars could only offer a list of medicines, and he couldn't conclude they were heading for the affected regions," he said.
