Urumqi (CNS) -- The ruins of an ancient city have been discovered in an area along a railway near Hejing county in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, according to the local cultural relics bureau on Tuesday.

The site has been well preserved, but no historic records concerning the trapezoidal site, which covers an area of 4,307 square meters, have been found.

Based on its location, the city may have been a post on the ancient Silk Road, according to an expert at the Hejing county cultural relics bureau.
