Ecns - Kevin Rudd, Australia's former Prime Minister, has said that high-speed broadband Internet access will play a crucial role in maximizing opportunities for Tasmania during the upcoming "Asian Century," the Singtao Daily (Australia) reported.

"We need to boost Tasmania's advantage," he said.

Rudd, currently serving as a Labor MP on the back bench, made the remarks in Hobart during a keynote speech on the Asian tourism market.

Rudd said that Australia's southernmost state must make efforts to attract millions of outbound Chinese tourists.

Although Tasmania has a good reputation for its clean environment -- a major draw for Asian tourists -- more marketing promotions need to be conducted in Asia, Rudd said, adding that high-speed broadband access and premium facilities play a critical role in the growth of tourism.
