Beijing (CNS) -- People in China's rural areas are on the verge of reaching a wealthy life, according to an index that measures the percent of people's income that must be spent to meet the basic needs of daily life.

The Engel coefficient, the proportion of total family income spent on food, declined by 1.1 percent to 39.8 percent in 2012 for China's rural families, according to a green book released on Wednesday.

The Green Book of Rural Area: Analysis and Forecast on China's Rural Economy (2012-2013) said rural residents earned 7,917 yuan (US$1,278.60) in per capita net income in 2012, a 13.5 percent increase from 2011.

Wages for rural residents jumped 16.3 percent last year, as the number of farmer-turned-workers and their monthly salary continued to grow, according to the green book.

Incomes for rural Chinese have grown faster than those of their urban counterparts for three consecutive years, it said.

The green book was jointly released by the Rural Development Institute under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Social Sciences Academic Press.
