Qiu Yuanping (R),the director of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, met the visiting San Francisco Mayor Edwin Mah Lee(L) on Monday.

Beijing (CNS) -- The Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council will provide $100,000 in aid for the restoration of the Chinese Hospital in San Francisco's Chinatown, the director of the office said on Monday.

Qiu Yuanping made the remarks during a meeting with the visiting San Francisco Mayor Edwin Mah Lee. San Francisco is well-known among Chinese people, as it is the first city in the United States where Chinese immigrants arrived, and many literary works recount their stories there, Qiu said.

Overseas Chinese in San Francisco have made many contributions to regional development, she added.

Lee, the first Chinese-American mayor in San Francisco's history, expressed thanks, saying the Chinese Hospital, a healthcare provider for the local Chinese community, provides new immigrants access to health care services.

"I will try my best to promote bilateral cooperation and economic development," Lee said. "I hope to bring more opportunities on the exchange and cooperation of China and San Francisco."

At the invitation of the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs, Lee led a 30-member group on his first official visit to China, where he will visit Guangzhou, Macao and his ancestral home Taishan in Guangdong province.
