China is taking a road of peaceful development which has never been experienced by other countries, and is expected to build a "community of interests" with its counterparts, Zheng Bijian, an expert on China studies, said on Saturday.

Zheng made the remarks at the Fifth World Forum on China Studies, which was held in Shanghai from March 23-24.

This year's forum came under the theme "China's Modernization: Its Road and Prospects."

Co-sponsored by the State Council Information Office and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, the forum aimed to provide a communication platform for domestic and overseas experts on China studies, as well as promote mutual understanding between China and other countries.

Dr. Sergei Leonidovich Tikhvinsky, of the Russian Academy of Science; Ezra Vogel, author of "Deng Xiaoping and the Transformation of China"; and Dr. Jao Tsung-I, emeritus professor of Chinese language and literature at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, were awarded for their outstanding contributions to China studies.
