Guangzhou (CNS) – A total of 8,491 government cars in Guangzhou have been equipped with Global Positioning Systems (GPS) devices to prevent official cars from being used for non-official purposes, according to the city's Party discipline inspection authority on Wednesday.
Guangzhou has more than 36,000 registered government cars, including on-duty and state-owned enterprises vehicles, and 8,491 are owned by the Party and government organs. By the end of 2012, all 8,491 cars were installed with GPS devices and identification terminals.
The monthly average mileage of Guangzhou government cars in 2012 was 1,291 km, a decrease of 27 percent from previous years, when GPS devices were not installed, said the discipline inspection authority. About 40 million yuan have been saved on running government cars.
Starting in April, the authority will disclose data collected through the GPS supervision every month in an effort to continue curbing the misuse of official vehicles.
