Beijing (CNS) -- Construction of the world's longest coal pipeline began in early March, according to the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) on Wednesday.

The pipeline will transport coal southward from Shenmu, a city in northern Shaanxi province, to Weinan, which is near the capital of Xi'an. Both Shenmu and Weinan are coal-rich cities.

Coal will be processed into coal slurry and transported through the 80.56 kilometer pipeline, alleviating pressure on railways and highways.

It would be the first coal pipeline built by the CNPC, and is expected to be completed by the end of December this year.
