Hong Kong (CNS) -- Affected by global warming, the frequency of extreme weather events is expected to increase around the world this year, said Cen Zhiming, director of the Hong Kong Observatory, at a press conference on Monday.

Cen reminded the Hong Kong residents to be on alert.

Based on weather conditions in Hong Kong in recent years, Cen predicts that heavy rainfalls might come to Hong Kong this year.

The annual number of tropical cyclones landing within the 500-kilometer range of Hong Kong will be four to seven, according to Cen.

The Hong Kong Observatory will issue tropical cyclone warning signals if one is centered within 800 kilometers of Hong Kong and might affect the region later.
