Hong Kong (CNS) -- China's yuan-denominated deposits at domestic banking units (DBUs) in the local banking sector in Taiwan totaled 12.9 billion yuan ($2.08 billion) as of March 11, according to Taiwan's central bank last Friday.

Domestic banks operating in Taiwan have started conducting yuan-denominated businesses, such as deposits, loans and remittances, since Feb 6.

Currently, 53 banks in Taiwan are permitted to conduct yuan-denominated transactions.

Between Feb 6 and March 11, yuan remittances at the domestic banks totaled 1.87 billion yuan from 4,181 transactions, the central bank added.

Taiwan's central bank also said that it is in initial talks with the mainland to negotiate a currency swap agreement to keep yuan liquidity stable in the region.

Perng Fai-nan, head of the central bank, is scheduled to report to a legislative financial sub-committee on the progress of the yuan-dominated business on March 18 in Taiwan.
