Beijing (CNS) -- The self-sufficiency rate of grain in China reached 98%, and only 2% of the grain in China is imported from other countries, according to Chen Xiaohua, vice minister of agriculture.

Chen made the remarks at a press conference on rural development and agricultural production held at the first session of the 12th National People's Congress (NPC) in Beijing on Monday.

Chen said that China's total grain output reached 589 million tons in 2012.

The strong harvest will mark nine consecutive years of growth for China's grain output.

Official statistics showed that China imported a record 2.3 million tons of rice in 2012. Some people were concerned that China might increasingly depend on overseas markets for its grain supplies.

Facing these concerns, Chen said that the fluctuation in international food prices is one of the reasons behind the increased import of rice by China.

However, imported grain only contributes to 2% of the total food supply in China, so its food security is still guaranteed, Chen added.
