Beijing (CNS) -- Cultural heritage, especially ancient buildings, should be protected and handed down to our descendants, a political advisor said.

Song Zhenhao, a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee, said governments should build a new living community outside the ancient city in order to protect cultural relics, which are disappearing in the process of urbanization.

Beijing now intends to rebuild the city wall after demolishing the ancient fortifications, but the pseudo-classic architecture has no value, Song added.

Some local governments use farmlands to build tourist resorts that attract few tourists, Song said, and it would be much better if they invested the money in the preservation of ancient architecture.

The government should consider experts' suggestions when restoring ancient buildings, and not only focus on extension, he said. Sometimes extension can lead to destruction, he added.
