Hong Kong (CNS) -- Hong Kong saw a record number of new HIV infections in 2012, the city's Centre for Health Protection said on Wednesday.

A total of 513 new HIV infections were reported last year, a 17 percent increase from the previous high of 438 cases in 2011.

The new cases bring Hong Kong's cumulative total of reported infections to 5,783 since the first case in 1984.

Dr. Wong Ka-hing, a consultant with the Centre for Health Protection, said at a press conference that sexual contact was the major source of transmission last year.

Of the 513 new cases, 254 acquired the infection through homosexual or bisexual exposure, and 126 through heterosexual contact.

Most of the patients were aged between 20 and 50, and nearly 80 percent were male, said Wong.

Male homosexual contact has become the major challenge for Hong Kong and the world in the effort to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS, he added.

Wong pointed out that using condoms properly is the most effective way to prevent infection.
