Sydney (CNS) -- Two memoranda of understanding were signed by Chinese and Australian academic institutions on Wednesday, pushing forward agricultural cooperation between the two countries.

The documents were signed at a launching ceremony for the University of Sydney's new Centre for Carbon, Water and Food. Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard attended.

China has been a key agricultural exporter for Australia, and bilateral trade volume between the two countries has also been on the increase, according to Gillard.

The first agreement between the University of Sydney and the Chinese Academy of Agriculture Science will see a Sino-Australia Joint Laboratory for Sustainable Agro-Ecosystems established at the Centre. A mirror facility will also be created in Beijing.

The second memorandum, which creates a similar arrangement, is with Nanjing Agricultural University.

The agreements will enable joint research in areas such as crop protection, food and soil security, and the mitigation of climate-change effects on agricultural ecosystems.

The bilateral effort will also include research projects for international agencies such as the World Bank and the Gates Foundation.

The Centre for Carbon, Water and Food is Australia's first multi-disciplinary research organization dedicated to tackling food security and environmental challenges.
