Beijing (CNS) -- The island province of Hainan called for a less restrictive duty-free policy during a group discussion Tuesday at the 12th National People's Congress.

Hainan has two duty-free stores at airports in Sanya and the capital Haikou.

Total revenue from the shops has reached 4.2 billion yuan (US$600 million) since the offshore duty-free policy was implemented in April 2011, said Jiang Dingzhi, governor of the province.

Duty-free shoppers in Sanya topped 30,000 every day during the last Spring Festival, when smog in north China forced 1.6 million people to spend the holiday in Hainan, said Luo Baoming, party secretary and chairman of the provincial people's congress.

"We are unceasingly adjusting the policy," said Shen Shuhai, deputy director of the tariff department.
