Urumqi (CNS) -- Over 10,000 children under the age of 8 have benefited from an EU-assisted project that ended in February, according to an official from the Save the Children Fund in Urumqi on Tuesday.

The three-year project, which was launched in March 2010, was designed to improve services for early childhood development in urban and rural China.

The project covered four regions in China: Beijing, Tibet, Xinjiang, and Yunnan.

Under the project, a total of 18 early childhood development centers were built in the four regions. Xinjiang is home to five such centers.

EU injected a total of 200,000 euros into the project in Xinjiang, according to a project leader in the Xinjiang branch of the fund.

Relevant training was provided to early childhood development workers in the region.

The Save the Children Fund, commonly known as Save the Children, is an internationally active non-governmental organization that promotes children's rights, provides relief and helps support children in developing countries.
