Beijing (CNS) -- The newly-issued policies aimed to curb property speculation may partly hurt citizens' interests, but they will benefit the majority, an official said Monday.

Jiang Weixin, a deputy to the National People's Congress and minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, made the remarks when asked whether the new policies would threaten home buyers' interests.

Jiang said the policies represent the majority's interests and also our long-term interests. They can't possibly satisfy all 1.3 billion people at one time, he added.

He also said more public housing will be built.

The policies have only just been unveiled, so "let's give them some time first," he said on Saturday.

On Friday, just days ahead of the two sessions, the State Council announced new curbs, including higher transaction duties, increased down payments and mortgage interest rates, and strict purchase qualifications to further tighten its grip on the real estate sector.
