China leads crackdown on rare species smuggling  

中国组织跨洲联合缉私 缴获6.5吨象牙及其制品

记者17日从中国国家林业局获悉,1月6日至2月5日,由中国会同有关方面,组织亚洲、非洲等22个国家,成功开展代号为“眼镜蛇行动”的濒危物种联合缉私活动,共破获走私濒危物种案件200多起,逮捕走私犯罪嫌疑人100多名,缴获包括6.5吨象牙及其制品在内的大量野生动植物及其制品。

Beijing (CNS) -- A China-lead operation involving more than 22 countries and organizations in a wide-reaching crackdown on the smuggling of endangered species has been successful, according to the State Forestry Administration on Sunday.

More than 200 cases were pursued in the operation and more than 100 suspects have been arrested, the administration said.

Numerous endangered items have been confiscated, including 42 tons of rosewood, 6.5 tons of ivory, 1.55 tons of shahtoosh, 0.8 tons of pangolin shells, 22 rhinoceros horns, 10 tiger hides and 7 leopard hides.

The operation "Cobra Action" involved South Africa, the United States, and organizations including the CITES, the World Customs Organization and Interpol.
