Taipei (CNS) -- A series of events initiated by Taipei's Department of Cultural Affairs to promote Chinese-language characters began Saturday.

A handwriting performance, a lantern-raising and other activities were held at the Taipei's Songshan Cultural and Creative Park.

A ceremony was performed to mark the inheritance of learning Chinese characters. First, Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin and two other officials from the culture sector wrote three Chinese characters, then three student representatives from local primary, junior and high schools wrote three words.

"My father has asked me to practice calligraphy since I was in junior high school, and all the family members get together to write spring couplets during Spring Festival," said Mayor Hau.
