'Lucky' marriages can end in tears

Shanghai (CNS)-- Getting married on "auspiciously" numbered dates is no guarantee of lasting love, as many couples get divorced shortly after, according to the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau.

Chen Zhanbiao, director of the bureau's marriage registry center, said that a sense of responsibility, not luck, is essential to a successful marriage.

Chen said that 7,300 Shanghai couples registered for marriage on January 4, 2013. In Chinese the date sounds like "love you for life."

Ten days later, four couples had already broken up, Chen said, adding that 590 out of 7,000 couples had divorced since getting married on August 8, 2008, another ostensibly lucky day.

Shanghai's highest daily record for marriage registrations was set on October 10, 2010, when 10,150 couples became husband and wife. More than 360 of those marriages ended in less than three years, Chen said.
