Guangzhou (CNS)-- Guangdong Province will conduct a one-month crackdown on the illegal production and selling of problematic shark fins, according to Guangzhou's food safety commission on Tuesday.

The announcement comes amid reports that many of the fins used to make shark fin soup are fake and even poisonous. The southern province of Guangdong has come under the spotlight as a major source of the fins served in China.

The campaign will include inspections of the fin processing industry and dried seafood wholesale markets, according to the commission. Illegal producers or sellers of fake fins will have to answer to the police.

The commission said the government will offer rewards of up to 300,000 yuan (US$48,254) to people who report information related to counterfeit shark fins.
