Contaminated water supply shut off in Hebei

河北省邯郸市人民政府5日夜间通报称，接山西省有关部门通报，由于漳河上游浊漳河山西境内发生了事故性污染物排放，该市政府决定停止从岳城水库供水，改为全部由羊角铺地下水源地供水，由于单水源供水管网压力较低，造成部分市区供水困难。

Handan (CNS) -- The water supply in parts of Handan City, Hebei Province, has been cut off since Saturday afternoon because of source contamination, according to a statement from the local government.

The statement said the contamination was caused by an accident in neighboring Shanxi Province where industrial pollutants had poured into the upper reaches of the Zhanghe River.

The city cut off its water supply from the Yuecheng Reservoir, which is fed by the river, around 2 p.m. Saturday and switched to another underground water source, according to the statement.

Local residents have been quick to clear supermarket shelves of bottled water. A citizen surnamed Gao told reporters that she could only find milk and soda water.

However, Handan's largest supermarket said it had an unlimited supply of drinking water and would replenish supplies from neighboring regions in case of a shortage.

The statement did not provide a specific number of areas and households affected by the emergency.
