Zhengzhou (CNS) -- A list of the victims of a fire that engulfed a private orphanage in central China's Henan Province was released Friday by the local government.

"Wuhai," a 20-year-old man who suffered from polio, and four children named "Xiaoyu," "Zhagen," "Sha'ni" and "Xiaoyaba" were among the victims who died, along with two baby boys who had not been named, according to the local government.

"Xiaoshi," a 10-year-old boy with polio, was seriously injured in the fire, but is showing stable vital signs in an intensive care unit, the local government said.

The fire broke out at around 8:42 a.m. Friday in the orphanage in Lankao County, where eight victims, including five boys and two girls, were sheltered by a woman named Yuan Lihai, who owned the home.

A controversial figure in the community, Yuan Lihai had been a street vendor near a public hospital before she became known for sheltering abandoned children.

Yuan had taken in more than 100 children and her motives were doubted by some local residents, reports said.

According to regulations, Yuan was not qualified to adopt children, and local authorities had arranged for a welfare home to take in several of the kids two years ago.

Yuan lived with 34 children before the fire. She is now in police custody.
