Beijing (CNS) -- China is actively promoting the establishment of a tsunami warning system and disaster relief mechanism, according to the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) on Thursday.

The South China Sea, which links the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, is a hazard-prone sea area, said SOA spokesman Shi Qingfeng at a press conference.

A tsunami warning system would improve the efficiency of disaster prevention and reduction in the area, he added.

China's tsunami warnings currently require authorization from the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, said Zhang Zhanhai, head of the SOA's international cooperation department.
