Beijing (CNS) -- China opposes and condemns the auction of looted cultural relics, an official at the State Administration of Cultural Heritage said Tuesday in response to the sale of a Qing Dynasty seal by a French auction house.

Artcurial sold the oval-shaped imperial jade seal for 1.12 million euros (9.21 million yuan) on Monday. The seal's design indicates that it was used exclusively in the imperial study during the reign of the Qianlong (1711-1799) and Jiaqing (1796-1820) Emperors.

The seal was stolen during the sacking of the Summer Palace, or Yuanmingyuan.

The official said China consistently opposes the auction of looted cultural relics and urges auction houses to comply with the spirit of international treaties and professional ethics.

Two Chinese relics that were also looted from the palace were withdrawn from auction by Bonhams in London in November this year.
