Nanchang (CNS)–Nearly 110,000 migratory birds had arrived for the winter at Poyang Lake by mid-December, according to local authorities.

There are fewer birds at China's largest freshwater lake than the same period last year because of weather-related factors, said Wen Sibiao, an official from the Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve.

However, increased precipitation has led to higher water levels, so expanding wetland areas have created broader food sources, Wen said. Birds are distributed across a larger area than in previous years, and some of them are outside the monitored region.

Efforts have been implemented to curb the poisoning, trade and consumption of migratory birds, he added.
