Shenyang (CNS) -- Nearly 200,000 HIV/AIDS patients in China have received free treatment as of today, and the death rate has dropped to 10 percent from 31 percent, an official said on Sunday.

Lei Zhenglong, deputy director of the Bureau of Disease Control under the Ministry of Health, announced the data at a forum for World Aids Day in Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning Province.

However, the epidemic situation is still serious, Lei said.

Widespread discrimination is still a problem, and some hospitals turn away people with HIV/AIDS, which is contradictory to the medical spirit, he said.

China has published the AIDS Action Plan for the 12th Five-Year program to combat the epidemic. The plan aims to reduce the total number of patients infected and diagnosed with AIDS to 1.5 million by 2015, Lei added.
