Yangling (CNS) -- Food insecurity is becoming a matter of concern as sustainable agricultural development is increasingly challenged by a surging world population, said an official at an exposition in Yangling, Shanxi province, on Tuesday.

Our world is home to some one billion hungry people, and factors such as skyrocketing food prices, deteriorating environmental quality and limited arable land make the situation even worse, said Wan Gang, minister of science and technology.

Although China's annual total grain output has reached 500 billion kg for six consecutive years, agricultural development is still challenged by limited water resources, decreasing numbers of farmers and aggravated agricultural pollution, said Wan.

One efficient way to promote the development of modern agriculture is to strengthen international cooperation in science and technology, Wan added.

China has established long-term cooperation with more than 100 countries, regions and international organizations to jointly promote the development of agriculture in China and the world at large, he said.
