Tianjin (CNS) -- Experts arrived in north China's Tianjin Municipality on Tuesday to tag and made preparations for releasing 13 oriental white storks that had recovered from poisoning.

We have attached metal or plastic tags to their legs or wings, which allow us to record and study various aspects of their lives, said Hou Yunqiu, deputy director of the National Bird Banding Center.

Two bands were attached to each of the 13 storks and the two healthiest individuals were equipped with GPS (Global Positioning System), Hou added.

Dai Yuanming, director of the local organization for wild animal protection, said the birds were fully recovered and would be set free the next day if everything went well.

From Nov. 11 to 15, 20 birds were found dead and another 13 poisoned in Tianjin's wetland areas tainted by highly-toxic pesticide.

The species, which usually reproduces in northeastern China and migrates south for the winter, is classified as endangered on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List of Threatened Species.
