‘King banana’ auctions for $17,932  

福建选出“蕉王”:一串重139.3斤拍卖11.18万元

首届漳州天宝香蕉文化节19日在福建漳州举行，由福建香蕉主产地漳州市芗城区天宝镇选送的“天宝5号”香蕉以重量139.3斤、总分11.85分摘得桂冠，获得“蕉王”称号。

Zhangzhou (CNS) -- A bunch of Tianbao No.5 bananas weighing 69.65 kilograms won the title of "king banana" at a competition held in Zhangzhou, Fujian Province, on Monday.

The king banana bunch was later sold at auction to a local enterprise that had bid 111,800 yuan (US$17,932).

Bananas are graded on pulp weight, cleanliness of appearance, uniformity of arrangement and other factors, according the review panel.

All the money from the auction will be donated to the Xiangcheng District Charity Federation, said the organizer.
