Foshan (CNS) -- Over 200 practitioners of Wing Chun, a Chinese martial art and form of self-defense, gathered at its birthplace in Foshan, Guangdong Province, on Sunday.

It was the third Wing Chun event organized by Hong Kong's Ving Tsun Athletic Association and the Foshan Ancestral Temple Museum. The performers not only came from China, but also the United States, Italy and other countries.

"It is a borderless sport that everybody has access to, and it is good for both body and personality shaping," said a local master.

I began learning this type of martial art for fun, but gradually came to love it, said John Kaufman, an American who has been practicing Wing Chun for over 30 years. Kaufman teaches it in Hong Kong, where his followers mostly include locals as well as some foreigners.

Foshan is the hometown of Yip Man, a Chinese martial artist known for his skill in Wing Chun. He had several students who later became martial arts teachers in their own right, including Bruce Lee. The late master has regained fame in recent years, especially after two semi-biographical films were released in 2008 and 2010.
