Shanghai (CNS) -- Tourists from the Chinese mainland topped the list for shopping in the Asia-Pacific Region, spending an average of US$874 per trip, ahead of Japan and Australia, according to a recent report by Travelzoo and CNNGo.

A Japanese tourist spends an average US$723 on shopping per trip, while an Australian tourist shells out US$668, said the report. For Chinese tourists, Hong Kong is still the ultimate shopping paradise, ahead of the U.S., France, Japan and Italy.

Chinese tourists spent US$7.2 billion on high-end luxury brands during the 2012 Spring Festival, a surprisingly high figure, according to statistics from the World Luxury Association.

The tourism sectors of different countries are exploring new ways to attract generous Chinese tourists. Hilton Hotel now offers Chinese tea, food and TV channels, for example, while the European Travel Commission unveiled a Chinese version of its website at the beginning of the year.
