Rare tri-colored pottery unearthed in Hebei

Shijiazhuang (CNS) -- Several pieces of tri-colored pottery from the Sui Dynasty (581-618) have been recovered from kilns found last July in north China's Hebei province, a local official said on Thursday.

As this year's excavation work nears its end, more than 200,000 ceramic pieces have been cleared out of 11 kilns, said Wang Huimin, an archaeologist from the Cultural Relics Institute of Hebei.

Tri-colored pottery from the Sui Dynasty is a major discovery because it is much rarer than the widely-known tri-colored pottery of the Tang Dynasty, Wang said.

The discovery is also important because it shows that the kilns in Xingtai, a city in southern Hebei, were capable of producing tri-colored pottery during the Sui, he added.
