Sansha (CNS) -- Five hundred green turtles, a rare and endangered species, were released into the ocean at Yongxing Island on Tuesday. Five of them were equipped with satellite homing devices which will allow scientists to track their migration.

The activity was organized by the Fishery Bureau of China's Ministry of Agriculture and local authorities, who also returned one million Babylonia areolatas (gastropods) and three tons of eucheuma (seaweed) to enrich fishery resources.

We protect ecology, make rational use of resources and protect endangered species through such activities, said Li Yanliang, an officer from the Ministry of Agriculture.
